The gāndharva said: "On seeing that his hermitage was bereft of his sons, the grief-stricken sage left it again.
गंधर्व ने कहा: "यह देखकर कि उसका आश्रम उसके पुत्रों से वंचित हो गया है, दुःखी ऋषि ने उसे फिर से छोड़ दिया।
O Pārtha! He saw a river swollen with the new water of the rainy season. It was sweeping away many trees that grew along the banks.
हे पार्थ! उसने वर्षा ऋतु के नये पानी से उफनती हुई एक नदी देखी। यह किनारों पर उगे कई पेड़ों को बहा ले जा रहा था।
O descendant of Pūru! On seeing this, the miserable one again began to think that he would certainly be killed in this water.
हे पुरु के वंशज! यह देखकर वह दु:खी फिर सोचने लगा कि इस जल में उसकी मृत्यु अवश्य होगी।
Thereupon, the great sage bound himself with strong ropes and, struck with great grief, flung himself into the waters of that great river.
इसके बाद, महान ऋषि ने खुद को मजबूत रस्सियों से बांध लिया और, बड़े दुःख से आहत होकर, खुद को उस महान नदी के पानी में फेंक दिया।
O chastiser of enemy armies! But the river tore those ropes away and, unfettered, washed the riṣi up onto the bank.

Freed from the bindings, the great riṣi arose and gave the river the name of Vipāśā.

Finding that he was once again on dry land, he exclaimed that he was unable to die at his own hands and returned to his hermitage.

When he was returning to his hermitage, his daughter-in-law Adṛśyantī followed him. As she came near, he heard the sound of Vedic incantations, embellished with the fullness of meaning of the six branches.

अनुव्रजति को न्वेष मामित्येव च सोऽब्रवीत् अहं त्वदृश्यती नाम्ना तं स्नुषा प्रत्यभाषत शक्तेर्भार्या महाभाग तपोयुक्ता तपस्विनी
"Who is following me?" he asked. "I am Adṛśyantī, Śakti's wife," his daughter-in-law answered. "O illustrious one! I am austere, engaged in austerities."
"मैं कौन पीछा कर रहा हूँ?" उसने पूछा. "मैं शक्ति की पत्नी दृश्यंती हूं," उनकी बहू ने उत्तर दिया। "हे महामहिम! मैं तपस्वी हूँ, तपस्या में लगा हुआ हूँ।"
Vaśiṣṭha said: "O daughter! Who is reciting the Veda-s and their aṅgas that I hear? It is just as I have heard it from Śakti earlier."
वशिष्ठ ने कहा: "हे पुत्री! मैं जो वेद और उनके अंग सुन रहा हूं, उनका पाठ कौन कर रहा है? यह वैसा ही है जैसा मैंने पहले शक्ति से सुना है।"
Adṛśyantī said: "In my womb, there is a son begotten by Śakti. He has been there for twelve years. O sage! You have heard his recitations."
दृश्यंती ने कहा: "मेरे गर्भ में शक्ति द्वारा उत्पन्न एक पुत्र है। वह बारह वर्षों से वहाँ है। हे ऋषि! आपने उसका पाठ सुना है।"
Gāndharva said: Having been thus addressed by her, Vaśiṣṭha, the best of riṣi-s, was greatly delighted. O Pārtha! Exclaiming that there was a son, he refrained from death.
गंधर्व ने कहा: उनके द्वारा इस प्रकार संबोधित किये जाने पर ऋषियों में श्रेष्ठ वशिष्ठ बहुत प्रसन्न हुए। हे पार्थ! पुत्र होने की दुहाई देकर वह मरने से बच गया।

ततः प्रतिनिवृत्तः स तया वध्वा सहानघ कल्माषपादमासीनं ददर्श विजने वने
The unblemished one returned, accompanied by his daughter-in-law. He found Kalmāṣapāda seated in the deserted forest.
बेदाग व्यक्ति अपनी बहू के साथ वापस लौटा। उन्होंने कल्माषपाद को सुनसान जंगल में बैठे हुए पाया।

स तु दृष्ट्वैव तं राजा क्रुद्ध उत्थाय भारत आविष्टो रक्षसोग्रेण इयेषात्तुं ततः स्म तम्
O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! On seeing him, possessed by the rākṣasa, the king arose in anger and sought to devour him.
हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उसे राक्षस के वश में देखकर राजा क्रोधित हो उठा और उसे खा जाना चाहा।
But seeing the king of evil deeds, Adṛśyantī spoke to Vaśiṣṭha in fear and alarm,
परन्तु अदृष्यन्ती ने दुष्ट कर्म करने वाले राजा को देखकर भय और भय के कारण वसिष्ठ से कहा,
"O illustrious one! This terrible rākṣasa looks like death himself, as he advances towards us with a fearful wooden club in his hand.

O best among those who are learned in all the Veda-s! Except you, no one on earth has the power to ward him off.

O illustrious one! Save me from this evil one, whose form is terrible. Without a doubt, the rākṣasa is advancing towards us to devour us.
हे महामहिम! मुझे इस दुष्ट से बचाइये, जिसका रूप भयानक है। निस्संदेह, राक्षस हमें निगलने के लिए हमारी ओर बढ़ रहा है।
